Perception of temporal cues at discourse boundaries

چکیده
This study investigates the role of temporal cues in the perception at discourse boundaries. Target cues were penult lengthening, final lengthening, and pause duration. Results showed that different cues are weighted differently for different purposes. Final lengthening is more important for subjects to detect boundaries, while pause duration is more responsible in cuing the boundary sizes.

Temporal Cues of Discourse Boundaries in L1/L2 Mandarin Speech
This paper investigated the temporal cues of discourse boundaries in L1 and L2 Mandarin speech. Spontaneous speech in this study was elicited by asking subjects to retell a short non-verbal film, the Pear Story (Chafe 1980), after watching. The findings of the study are that 1) for L1 Mandarin speech, final syllable lengthening is a salient cue of prosodic boundaries and the pre-boundary syllab...
متن کاملPerception of Discourse Boundaries by Taiwan Mandarin Speakers
This study looks at whether Taiwan Mandarin speakers were able to detect discourse boundary cues in Mandarin (Guoyu and Putonghua), English, and Japanese. Results showed that there was a distinct language effect. Mandarin boundaries were harder to detect than English and Japanese boundaries for these listeners. This is thought to be due to the different boundary cue compositions in the four lan...

This study examined durational cues at discourse boundaries in spontaneous speech in Taiwan Southern Min (TSM) using a two-hour monologue corpus contributed by four elderly female speakers from the same dialectal region. Discourse labeling was done following the method of Fon et al. (2011). Two durational cues were examined: syllable duration and post-syllable pause duration. Results showed tha...

متن کاملA Cross-linguistic Study on Discourse and Syntactic Boundary Cues in Spontaneous Speech: Using Duration as an Example
This study focuses on the acoustic-phonetic cues at discourse and syntactic boundaries in English, Guoyu, Putonghua, and Japanese. Speech was elicited by having talkers describe the events in The Pear Story film. Recorded data were transcribed and segmented into discourse and syntactic units. Acousticphonetic measurements of syllable duration and syllable onset intervals (SOIs) were taken on th...
